Geothermics Southern German Molasse Basin

Science forum for deep geothermal energy in the South German Molasse Basin

The South German Molasse Basin is actually the most important region for deep geothermal energy use in Germany. Partially karstified limestones and dolomites of the geothermal Upper Jurassic (Malm) Aquifer are downbending from north to south from the outcrops in the Swabian and Franconian Alb under the European Alps. In the Munich region 600 to 650 m thick carbonates are encountered in 1.500 to 4.500 m depth, covered by thick Tertiary sediments of the Molasse Basin. Production and injection rates of the 15 geothermal plants range from 30 to 150 l/s. Production temperatures range between approx. 70 and 150 °C.

One of the objective of the research project is to bring together scientists, consultants, geothermal plant owners, contractors and state agencies to discuss actual questions and problems in regular open project meetings and Workshops. Another scientific aim is to forecast potential temperature or pressure interferences of geothermal doublet or triplet systems in the Munich region by actualizing a regional thermo-hydraulic 3D-model and to contribute to the understanding of the process of induced microseismicity which might occur during production or injection. New petrophysical and temperature data is added to LIAG’s Geophysics Information System (FIS GP).
