The aim of this research field is to gain extended knowledge about the structure, the evolution, and the precise age of continental sediment successions. Research is based on the combined application of geophysical and geochronological methods and focuses on Quaternary and Tertiary sediments. To evaluate future natural and man-made environmental changes, a deep understanding of appropriate data from the past and the corresponding geological situation is necessary. Continental sediment basins, lake and cave sediments, as well as loess-/ palaeosol deposits and peat offer a valuable source of information concerning changes in environmental conditions. They represent the habitat that is most relevant to but also most influenced by mankind. Furthermore, sediment systems provide several economically important resources.
